Please join us for our Summer Volunteer training class, beginning on July 8, 2019. Helpline volunteers play a critical role in serving our community by answering the call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for an 11 county service area in South-Central Pennsylvania. You will be the one talking with callers during their most challenging times. They will turn to you for assistance finding food, clothing, shelter, counseling services, and disaster relief information.
Working on the helpline is challenging and rewarding with no two shifts exactly the same. This is a great way to give back to the community and directly impact residents in their time of need.
Training consists of once a week classes for 8 weeks, totaling 35 hours. Some will be lecture style, learning about the practices and procedures of CONTACT, different mental health issues, substance abuse, and building the foundation for skills like active listening and information and referral. You will also practice the skills of looking up referrals on the computers and simulate listening calls with staff and your fellow class members. After classroom training, you’ll then complete 20 hours of apprenticeship, which means shadowing a current experienced volunteer and getting comfortable using the phones.
